Algoma University
Algoma University is an undergraduate-only institution, offering degrees in more than 30 programs, including environmental science, business, and studies in Anishinaabemowin. Class sizes are small, and there are opportunities for students to conduct research and be published alongside faculty, which is a strong advantage when it comes to employment or grad school.
“Our approach to education, undergrad research opportunities, relevant programming and our role in cultivating cross-cultural learning between Indigenous communities and other communities prepares our students to tackle the most pressing issues of our time,” says president Asima Vezina.
The main campus is surrounded by natural beauty in the heart of the Great Lakes. Students can participate in clubs, intramural activities and varsity sports. The campus features centres for international students (the Globe) and Indigenous students (Anishinaabe Student Life Centre). The Experiential Learning Hub is a collaborative space that focuses on research and innovation, and helps students build the skills employers seek.
Algoma is developing Makwa Waakaa’igan, a cultural welcoming centre dedicated to teaching, learning and reconciliation. Expected to break ground in 2024, the centre features a partnership with NOSM University to create a Mental Health and Addictions Research and Training Institute. Algoma also offers degree programs in Timmins and Brampton. The Brampton campus is expanding with new classrooms, labs and a student centre.
Campus buzz: Students from all campuses come together for activities like the student leadership conference, ski days and cultural events such as the Gathering at the Rapids Pow Wow, Black History Month and Diwali celebrations.

Standout programs
Computer Science: Students receive a strong grounding in algorithms, programming languages, and the construction of computer systems and applications. Specializations include computer game technology and mobile software engineering.
Community Economic and Social Development: This program has a special focus on northern, rural, remote and Indigenous populations. In third and fourth year, students complete field placements with community organizations or government.
Life Sciences and the Environment: Offerings span biology, psychology and environmental science with a focus on research and experience. Students hone research skills working in the lab and during internships.
