Capilano University
Nestled at the foot of the North Shore mountains, 20 minutes from downtown Vancouver, Capilano University is a great choice for outdoor enthusiasts and urbanists alike. Opened in 2019, the Lower Lonsdale campus is located in the centre of the rapidly evolving shipyards community and offers continuing education classes. The kálax-ay campus in Sechelt, B.C., serves students on the Sunshine Coast and along the Whistler-Squamish corridor. With $48 million in funding from the provincial government, CapU has opened a new campus in Squamish to serve students in the Sea-to-Sky region. The average class size at Capilano is 25, allowing students the opportunity for individual attention.
The university is best known for its jazz, film, animation and performing arts programs. CapU graduate Bria Skonberg and instructor Brad Turner were nominated for Juno awards in 2020. Graduates have worked on Oscar-winning animated films, including Disney’s Zootopia. Capilano’s paralegal, early childhood care and education, music therapy and design programs are also highly regarded. The school developed the Indigenous Digital Accelerator to provide resources and mentoring to help Indigenous students launch their own businesses, as well as to help existing Indigenous entrepreneurs to expand. The Kéxwusm-áyakn Student Centre welcomes Indigenous students and regularly hosts an Elder-in-Residence program.
