Collège Nordique Francophone
Collège Nordique Francophone is the only post-secondary and continuing education institution north of the 60th parallel to offer professional training in French. Launched by the Fédération Franco-Ténoise, an organization that supports francophones in the Northwest Territories, the college focuses on community needs and jobs that are in high demand in the region. Through distance learning, students can complete diploma and certificate programs offered at other Canadian colleges and universities without leaving the North. At the campus in downtown Yellowknife, students can use school computers to participate in classroom discussions happening at other locations or to complete coursework.
The language school offers courses including English, French and Spanish. It also has specialized programs for civil servants and hosts workshops on a wide range of topics from cooking to medicinal plants. The college is a designated examination centre for language tests like the Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP), and French skills TEF Canada exam. With a close-knit community of roughly 400 students, Collège Nordique Francophone prides itself on its Nordic character and mandate to promote the cultural and linguistic diversity of the region. The school also offers language programming and educational workshops that have a local flavour. These programs include a culture-focused course in Tłı ̨cho ̨ and Inuktitut, two of the 11 official languages of the Northwest Territories.
