JIBC Maple Ridge

Justice Institute of British Columbia

Founded 1978 | New Westminster, B.C.

The Justice Institute of British Columbia (JIBC) specializes in training professionals in public safety, justice and social services through experiential education. The school offers career options in paramedicine, firefighting, law enforcement, security, emergency management, intelligence analysis, corrections, counselling and conflict resolution. In September of 2020, the Justice Institute of British Columbia launched a disaster management post-degree diploma, which prepares students to deal with global emergencies such as wildfires, earthquakes, the climate crisis and pandemics. In JIBC’s community care licensing officer program, students learn to monitor and inspect both public and private care facilities, provide support and education and bring facilities into compliance. In 2022, JIBC enhanced its firefighter training with a new $900,000 fire truck, funded by the B.C. government, that better reflects the technology currently in use out in the field.

JIBC has six campuses in B.C. and also provides distance education. The Maple Ridge campus is Western Canada’s most extensive fire-training ground with 30 training props, including the cargo hold of a ship and a simulated 11-car train derailment. The New Westminster campus includes the Dr. Donald B. Rix Public Safety Simulation Building. JIBC’s web-based Praxis simulation technology is used for emergency management training by both government agencies and industry.
