MacEwan University

Founded 1971 | Edmonton, Alta.

MacEwan University, in the heart of downtown Edmonton, emphasizes small class sizes and individualized learning; most classrooms seat between 10 and 50 people. The school offers 13 bachelor’s programs, including an applied bachelor’s degree, as well as 31 diploma and certificate programs. MacEwan’s tiered entrance scholarships of $1,000 to $5,000 are available for students with high school averages of 80 per cent and higher.

“A university education isn’t just about content; it’s about intent,” says president Annette Trimbee. “MacEwan is a downtown university focused on teaching and mentorship, so as our students pursue their education, they are also adding to the vibrancy of our city and its communities—bringing with them new energy, fresh ideas and a keen interest in tackling the issues of our time.”

The main campus’ contemporary design offers open spaces and plenty of spots to work and study. A second-level walkway connects the university’s buildings, except for the residence. Allard Hall provides classrooms, performance areas, recording and broadcast studios, and state-of-the-art technology for programs in the visual, performing and communication arts. At the kihêw waciston Indigenous Centre in the Robbins Health Learning Centre, students can access cultural advice, ceremonial spaces, a kitchen and computers. The SAMU building (student union centre) offers study spaces and amenities. Step off campus and you’re surrounded by bars, cafés, restaurants and shopping in downtown Edmonton.

Campus Buzz: A vacant lot in downtown Edmonton will be the site of a new building for the university’s school of business.
