Asper MBA Campus

Asper School of Business commons area. (Nardella/University of Manitoba)

Every Asper MBA student can request a one-on-one mentorship from a senior-level executive to help them develop their skills, build a network and gain specific knowledge about a company or industry. Students meet with their mentor at least five times in eight months, building a strong connection with an experienced corporate leader. The school also offers networking events, behind-the-scenes tours and small group meetings hosted by Manitoba business leaders.

The Asper program stresses flexibility for its students, offering weekday, weeknight, weekend and online classes. Participants can complete their courses in a single year or take up to six to finish, varying the commitment based on the demands of their life and career.

Half of the program consists of required courses focused on managerial accounting, corporate finance, marketing and other crucial topics. But students are free to tailor the remainder of their coursework to their interests and career goals. They can focus on a particular aspect of business, such as finance or marketing, or a broader theme, like emerging markets or entrepreneurship and innovation. The school also offers a specialized program for financial analysts that prepares participants to write the chartered financial analyst exams.

Regardless of the area of concentration, all students take mandatory classes in leadership, responsibility and managing change.

New students have the opportunity to take a series of boot camps in math and information technology, with a particular focus on spreadsheet software. The career development centre also offers workshops including resumé preparation, mock job interviews and advice on using social media to enhance a career.

There are plenty of opportunities for extracurricular activity as well. Asper runs the annual Stu Clark Investment Competition, and its team placed second in the prestigious John Molson case competition.
