New Brunswick College of Craft and Design
The New Brunswick College of Craft and Design (NBCCD) offers programs that emphasize excellence in the creation of fine craft, applied design and entrepreneurship. All students begin their studies in the one-year foundational visual arts (FVA) program, where they learn about 2D and 3D design theory, drawing, colour, art history, communications and the creative process. Students then apply to a two-year diploma program and can choose to major in one of eight studios, including ceramics, jewellery and metal arts, and textile design. Students can also apply to the Wabanaki visual arts program, which focuses on the traditional and contemporary crafts of the Wolastoqiyik, Mi’kmaq and Passamaquoddy peoples.
The New Brunswick College of Craft and Design and the Ontario College of Art and Design (OCAD) University recently signed a new pathway agreement for visual arts students. It allows graduates of the foundation visual arts program to be eligible for second-year entry into select OCAD University bachelor of fine arts programs, including integrated media, photography and sculpture/installation.
NBCCD has an average class size of 18 in the first year and 10 in diploma programs, creating an intimate learning atmosphere in a school of some 320 students. The campus is located in downtown Fredericton, on the banks of the Saint John River near the Beaverbrook Art Gallery. Opportunities for experiential learning include student gallery exhibitions, fine craft sales and practicum placements. The college does not offer student residences, so most students rent rooms in downtown Fredericton.
