The Ontario government announced $19.5 million in funding for research projects at the University of Waterloo on Friday.

The funding is split among four projects, one of which is the development of more environmentally friendly, fuel-efficient and cost-effective vehicles.

$8.7 million will be directed to the "green car" research lead by Dr. Xianguo Li. The goal of his research is to improve hybrid vehicle design to overcome the technical challenges associated with cost and reliability beyond 150,000 km.

Other projects include research into communication network security, creation of technologies to assist the software services sector, and new technologies for water treatment systems.
