Four Memorial University Regents Turfed

By Dale Kirby

Newfoundland and Labrador Minister of Education Joan Burke, criticized earlier this year for violating Memorial University’s autonomy by intervening in the institution’s presidential search process, replaced four members of the university’s Board of Regents last week.

As reported by The Telegram, all four Regents were replaced before their terms were due to end. The departing board members include the vice-chair of an ad hoc committee responsible for recommending changes to the Memorial University Act that would ensure autonomy for the university, particularity with respect to the role of the provincial government in the appointment of the university president.
