To mark the 125th anniversay of Louis Riel’s hanging, a new Métis centre was opened at Brandon University today. Officially announced last week, the centre is intended to be both a study and a meeting space for Métis students. Lorraine Mayer, who chairs the university’s native studies program told the CBC that Métis students are often not considered distinct from those of other aboriginal backgrounds. "They can also share who we are culturally with all the rest of the university, and I think that will go a long way to educating people about Métis," she said.
