SFU piping band takes top prize at World Pipe Band Championships in Scotland

Canadians have won another gold medal -- but this one isn’t Olympic related.The Simon Fraser University Pipe Band has taken the top prize at the pipe band world championships in Scotland, beating out more than 200 other bands.

It’s the fifth time the band has won gold at the championships since 2001.

A band from Ireland took second place and while a Scotland group took third.

Blake Schmidt, who plays tenor drum in the band, says despite beating the Scots at their own game, everyone is supportive and laid back about the competition.

The World Pipe Band Championships are considered to be Scotland’s largest annual musical and cultural event.
