Canadian music icon k.d. lang has told University of Alberta graduates they have a moral obligation to help every being on the planet.Lang has been awarded an honorary Doctorate of Laws degree at the university’s spring convocation.

Saying she opted to speak from the heart rather then write a speech, lang told the graduates they live in a free country with an "embarrassment" of both natural and human resources.

She urged them as potential leaders to use these advantages to do their best to benefit others and promote global peace.

The Grammy award-winning artist was born in Edmonton and in 1996 was named an officer of the Order of Canada.
