The field house at Memorial University in St. John’s, N.L., is closed because of a heavy snow buildup on a skylight.Officials are conducting an engineering assessment. Spokesperson Ivan Muzychka says in light of recent tragedies in Quebec with heavy snow collapsing roofs the university is acting to ensure safety.

Muzychka says it’s the first time this has happened to the fairly new building. The university will lay out its plan to deal with the situation later Thursday.

The St. John’s area has been hit by several storms in recent weeks, the latest dumping as much as 40 centimetres of snow on the city.
