St. Francis Xavier University has filed a complaint with the Town of Antigonish Electric Utility over its power rates. The utility says the complaint asks for the introduction of a new rate category that would reduce the charges assessed to the university. The university claims the current rates are unreasonable and discriminatory, a claim the utility denies.

The utility says it’s puzzled by the move, given the fact the rates were approved only a year ago and there was no objection from the university.

As well, the utility says any reduction in rates to the university would likely mean an increase in rates for other customers - primarily residential users.

A hearing on the university’s complaint will take place June 3-4.
