Renowned physicist Stephen Hawking has no immediate plans to leave his University of Cambridge posting to work in Waterloo, Ont.John Matlock, a spokesman for the Perimeter Institute, where Hawking was rumoured to be headed, says a report by a British newspaper suggesting Hawking was mulling over the move was exaggerated.
Matlock says Hawking will be visiting Waterloo, and the institute—a research centre for theoretical physics—is open to collaborating with the scientist. But it’s entirely up to Hawking.
Matlock says interest from Hawking would not be surprising as pre-eminent physicists from all over the world conduct research in Waterloo.
Hawking’s personal assistant has also confirmed the physicist will remain in England.
Hawking recently criticized the British government for slashing scientific funding after two science funding bodies were merged, jeopardizing hundreds of jobs.
