University of Alberta and Edmonton closer to hosting 2015 World University Games

Successful bid could mean up to $100 mil in upgrades

The City of Edmonton and the University of Alberta are one step closer to hosting the 2015 Universiade. The Edmonton bid was selected Wednesday by the Canadian Interuniversity Sport Partnership Selection Committee to work with the CIS to bring the event to Canada for the first time since 1983, which was hosted in Edmonton.

If the Edmonton bid is successful, the university could see up to $100 million in upgrades and new facilities, including a possible field house on its south campus.

They will now have to go through other steps which include securing government funding before they can be presented to the Federation Internationale du Sport Universitaire as the Canadian bid. The FISU will then choose between Edmonton and other international cities for the rights to host the event.

The Edmonton and U of A bid to host the Summer Games beat out Quebec City and Laval University’s bid to host the 2015 Winter Universiade.

Visits to the international candidate cities will be made in March 2010 by the FISU and a selection will be made a few months later in May. The 2009 Winter Universiade will be held in Harbin, China while Belgrade, Serbia hosts the summer event.
