The faculty strike at Vancouver Island University has ended after a settlement was reached Sunday. In a statement posted to its website, the university advised students that classes will resume Tuesday.

A Memorandum of Understanding was ratified by both members of the VIU Faculty Association and the Board of Governors Sunday evening. However, the most contentious issue, job security, remains unresolved and further government mediation will take place with a deadline of May 11. VIU had said that if the strike had not ended by Monday, April 11, then the semester may have been extended and students would have been granted tuition refunds upon request.

With faculty returning to work before that deadline, the semester is scheduled to end April 29, but the examination period may be canceled. Spring and summer courses will start as scheduled in May.
