LAC-MEGANTIC, Que. – More than 1,000 Lac-Mégantic residents are being allowed home today after last weekend’s devastating tanker-train derailment.
Officials told a news conference this morning that 1,200 out of about 2,000 evacuees are being given the green light to head home.
Quebec provincial police attended the news conference but gave no update on the official death toll.
They said late Monday afternoon that about 50 people, including 13 confirmed victims, have been declared missing.
The first bodies found on the weekend are being examined in Montreal to determine their identity.
The coroner’s office is asking the relatives of people missing to provide DNA to help identify victims.
