Balsillie offers US$212.5 million for the cash-strapped Coyotes

Harper loves the idea of a seventh Canadian team in the NHL

Research in Motion’s Jim Balsillie has offered US$212.5 million to buy the cash-strapped Phoenix Coyotes after the NHL team filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Tuesday. The deal is contingent on moving the team to Southern Ontario. Sources, however, tell ESPN that it’s unlikely the league or the city of Glendale will okay the deal. This isn’t the first time the Blackberry billionaire has tried to buy an NHL franchise. He failed to buy the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2006 and the Nashville Predators a year later. In Prague today, PM Stephen Harper expressed his support for a seventh Canadian team in the NHL.
