A scholarship fund in memory of Jessica Ghawi, the journalist killed in the Colorado shooting who also narrowly escaped Toronto’s Eaton Centre shooting, has already surpassed its $20,000 goal on the crowdfunding website, Indiegogo.com, to reach nearly $28,000, according to the National Post.

Ghawi, who also went by Jessica Redford, was an aspiring sports journalist. The scholarship will be used to send others to journalism school.

It’s not the first time the web has helped raise money for a deeply personal cause: last month, a fund for bullied bus monitor, Karen Klein, made more than $700,000.

As for Ghawi’s scholarship, there are still 119 days left to contribute. "Let’s show the power of social media for a great cause," the fund’s page says.
