Conservatives note Turmel’s “sovereigntist past”
NDP interim leader supported Bloc Québécois candidates in 2006 election
Stephen Harper’s Conservatives are highlighting NDP interim leader Nycole Turmel’s “sovereigntist past,” The Globe and Mail reports. Conservative strategists pointed out in a memo to party supporters that Turmel—a Quebec MP who last week stepped in for Jack Layton when he took a leave of absence—was “publicly supporting sovereigntist candidates”. According to the Conservatives, Turmel supported a number of Bloc Québécois candidates during the 2006 election. Harper strategists expressed an interest in whether or not Turmel still harbours pro-separatist sentiments.
