Hire more police, partner with local communities to fight crime and gangs
On April 7 while campaigning in Surrey, B.C., NDP leader Jack Layton promised to hire 2,500 more permanent police officers. An NDP government would also boost funding for the National Crime Prevention Centre and the Youth Gang Prevention Fund. Additionally, Layton promised to make gang recruitment illegal.
