Hundreds saved from mudslides
Around 600 still missing
About 260 people were rescued from the Taiwanese village of Shiao Lin after mudslides caused by typhoon Morakot destroyed their village and buried up to 600 others. Many villagers survived by rushing to higher ground minutes before the deadly slides fell upon their homes, but those rescued say hundreds have been left behind. The storm dropped two metres of rain on Taiwan, leading to at least 41 deaths, and caused the evacuation of 1.4 million people as it moved into China.
