Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Yunel Escobar will address the media at 3:30 p.m. today in New York to address the slur that was written into his eyeblack during a game earlier this week.

On Monday afternoon, a photo of Escobar displaying a message reading “tu ere maricon” written into his eyeblack was posted online. The Spanish expression is commonly translated as “you are a faggot,” but it could also possibly be an emasculating—and not necessarily homophobic—insult.

Still, the Jays released a statement saying they don’t support the message, whatever it may be, and are investigating the issue.

Some believe the whole incident may have been a prank done by another player, yet no players or officials noticed the message. At the press conference today, Escobar is expected to apologize and explain why he was carrying such a slur on his face.
