America is a country divided by race, Britain by class. Or, as Don Thompson writes in The $12 Million Stuffed Shark about how high-end art auctions work:

“In New York, traditional auction humor holds that lots are carried in by the only black person in the room. In London they are carried in by the only impoverished person.”
