Detroit is a city in decay. Everyone knows it. But just in case you’re not quite convinced that the Motor City is doomed, here’s some more proof: for more than a month, countless people walked past—and played road hockey near—a pair of dead, frozen feet protruding from a shallow puddle of ice. Everyone saw the black sneakers pointing out “like Popsicle sticks,” but nobody bothered to phone the police. The hockey players didn’t even stop their game. When a Detroit News reporter finally called the cops, it took more than a day for sirens to show up at the scene. As the reporter put it: “this city has not always been a gentle place,” but this “causes one to wonder how cold the collective heart has grown.” Indeed.
