U.S. President Barack Obama announced his bid for re-election in 2012 with a short online video released on Monday. Obama confirmed his bid in an email saying he will file nomination papers with the Federal Election Commission. “We’ve always known that lasting change wouldn’t come quickly or easily,” said Obama in the email. “But as my administration and folks across the country fight to protect the progress we’ve made—and make more—we also need to begin mobilizing for 2012, long before the time comes for me to begin campaigning in earnest.” The incumbent’s first fundraiser is scheduled for April 14 in Chicago. No Republicans have formally announced their candidacy for president yet.
