Russia denies mutiny
Georgia accuses Russia of backing attempted coup
Georgia’s interior ministry says it has put down a Russian-linked attempted coup, after a tank battalion mutinied. The commander of the base where the alleged mutiny took place has been arrested and others are being questioned. Russia denies any involvement. The two countries went to war last summer over a breakaway province of Georgia, which Russia has now effectively annexed. Relations remain extremely tense.
