The Chinese Army are a big part of the Beijing Games. Nine thousand of the performers in the opening ceremony were soldiers.They stand on guard,perfectly still,a top boxes around the perimeter of the Olympic Green. And it’s not uncommon to see BOCOG "volunteers" marching in tight formation back to their barracks at night.

But they also appear to do the gardening. Twice today, I encountered convoys of flatbed Army trucks ferrying large, ready to lay squares of grass around town.Weird .
