Supersonic, 1,000-mph car edges one step closer to reality

British researchers are one step closer to creating a supersonic car. Working in the blistering heat of the Mojave Desert, The Bloodhound Project has progressed to test-firing an 18-inch-diameter hybrid rocket, which they hope will propel their car to 1,000 mph in just 40 seconds, breaking the land speed record. Rocket scientist Daniel Jubb offers play-by-play analysis of the test-fire, and explains why the project “isn’t just petrol heads and science geeks playing boy racer in the desert.” Instead, says the 25-year-old, “We aim to truly inspire the next generation of Britain’s kids to engage in maths, science and technology in the classroom.”
