Pro-democracy protesters in Iran marched in the thousands today, when a state-sanctioned celebration was held to mark 30 years since the seizure of the American embassy during the early days of the Islamic Revolution. Protesters, who believe the June 12 presidential election was stolen by incumbent Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, were dispersed with tear gas and clubs. Unconfirmed reports also said that security forces had opened fire on the demonstrators. Severe restrictions on journalists in Iran make it difficult to verify these reports.
