Joel Stein isn’t a hockey beat writer, but he loves the game and occasionally manages to shoe-horn a piece about it into the pages of Time magazine. His editor, Josh Tyrangiel, thinks hockey just isn’t important enough to Americans to spend precious pages on, and told him to cease and desist. When Stein protested, Tyrangiel gave him one last chance to resuscitate interest in it. The magazine has also put it to an online vote—”Should Joel Stein be banned from writing about hockey?" At last check, the No’s were well ahead, at 88 per cent, versus 12 per cent who figure Time should scrub the sport entirely.
