A tsunami watch has been lifted for most of the Indian Ocean after two powerful earthquakes hit off Indonesia’s coast.

A tsunami watch has been lifted for most of the Indian Ocean after two powerful earthquakes hit off Indonesia’s coast.

The centre of the 8.6- and 8.2-magnitude quakes took place about 500 km off Banda Aceh, the capital of Indonesia’s Aceh province—the same area devastated by a 2004 tsunami and earthquake which killed 170,000 people in Aceh, and another 70,000 in 12 countries.

The tremors on Wednesday were felt across south-east Asia, prompting tsunami alerts for 28 countries in the region, but no giant waves were reported.
