Typhoon Nesat hits China after pounding the Philippines

Typhoon Nesat swept past Hong Kong Thursday before slamming into China’s Hainan Island, forcing schools to close and thousands to evacuate. The powerful storm had earlier pounded the Philippines, leaving at least 39 dead and 31 injured. Damage in Hong Kong was minimal, although financial markets were closed in anticipation of the storm.
