Violence in China escalates
As tension grows between Uighurs and Han Chinese, both ethnic groups take to the streets
A second day of unrest has engulfed the Chinese city of Urumqi, as groups of ethnic Han Chinese marched through the streets with clubs and machetes following yesterday’s riots in which at least 150 people were killed. Tensions are high in the capital of China’s Xinjiang province, between Han Chinese and ethnic Uighur’s, a Turkic, mostly Muslim minority in China who complain of discrimination and say their lands are being flooded with Han settlers from eastern China.
