An 88-year-old white supremacist entered the United States National Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C., killing one security guard before shooting himself. The exchange took place shortly before 1 pm on Wednesday. The gunman and the security guard were both taken to a nearby hospital; the guard was pronounced dead a few hours later and the gunman, James W. Brunn, is said to be in critical condition. The New York Times reports that Brunn embraces various conspiracy theories involving Jews, blacks and other minority groups. In 1983, he was sentenced to four years in jail after trying to kidnap members of the Federal Reserve Board. Brunn was able to make his way into the entrance area of the museum, despite heavy security and metal detectors.
