This week, on Maclean’s pop-culture podcast—hosted by Adrian Lee, Emma Teitel and Julia De Laurentiis Johnson—we talk about the idea of “peak TV.” John Landgraf, the CEO of FX, recently pronounced there to be too much television on air, in this “golden era” of TV. Is he right, and how could that possibly be a bad thing for TV viewers? Then, with students headed back to school next week, each of us gives our stamp of approval to our favourite TV shows and movies about high school. Finally, we dig into the sociology of the phenomenon that’s taken so much of the Internet by storm: the phrase “Netflix and chill,” an implicit invitation to retreat to your home for some thinly veiled nookie. We’ll discuss why this is the perfect expression of our times.
