WINDSOR, Ont. – Activists in Windsor, Ont., plan to lug 1,000 litres of water across the river to Detroit today to help residents who have had their water cut off.
The protest by the Windsor chapter of the Council of Canadians comes after Detroit’s utility shut off water to thousands of residents.
Those suspensions were paused on Monday for 15 days.
The utility says it is trying to educate customers on how to make payment plans, and that it is owed nearly $90 million on past due accounts.
The Canadian group says it will also call on U.S. President Barack Obama to declare a state of emergency, saying water is a human right.
A convoy of people will carry 50 jugs of water to Detroit and then hold a rally.
