Edmonton’s new mayor, Don Iveson, is preoccupied with the things you’d expect an Edmonton mayor to be worried about: rapid population growth and the resulting strain on the city’s infrastructure. He says people are willing to pay taxes for reasonable levels of service, but he wishes the federal government was a more active partner. Since Edmonton will be a crucial line of Conservative defence against NDP and Liberal gains in the next election, Iveson has real political clout this year.

Earlier, Iveson made his 30-second pitch—on escalator between floors at the Ottawa Convention Centre—for where he sees Canada in 2020.
