NDP: Expensive beer and a historic result in Newfoundland

The mood here is relatively subdued, even though the NDP is having a strong showing so far. Might have something to do with the fact that domestic bear is $5.25. The cheese puffs, though, are flowing.

Happy news for the NDP: Jack Harris wins in St. John’s East, Newfoundland (as mentioned before, the party’s first win in a general election in that province). The party is also pleasantly surprised with the popular vote in Atlantic Canada. It’s running about 27 per cent compared to 29 per cent for the Liberals. Almost vote for vote.

John Rafferty is leading in Thunder Bay. He’s run for office five times and never won.  A sentimental fave.

Colin Campbell is the deputy editor at Maclean’s. Since joining the magazine in 2005, he has also served as the foreign editor, business editor and a reporter covering everything from politics to sports.
