So on a whim last night we went to the National Arts Centre to see the Catalyst Theatre production of Jonathan Christenson’s Nevermore, part of the Magnetic North Theatre Festival.

It was masterful. Funny, dark, beautiful, grim, funny, tuneful, dark and funny. I’m not sure it’s great art, but it is craft on a level I’ve rarely seen at the theatre. And it’s uproarious fun. The CBC should videotape it for broadcast every year on Halloween. If you’re from Edmonton you know about Catalyst, or should. It’s too late on this go-around if you’re in Ottawa; Nevermore closed last night. If you’re in Toronto, where it plays next week as part of Luminato, go. It’s haunting. Appropriately enough.
