Economists wil tell you voting is irrational. Noam Chomsky and his many Canadian supporters will tell you it is a waste, since no matter who you vote for, the "business party" wins. But Andre Blais gets to the heart of the matter, in an excellent piece on voting behaviour by Don Butler:

"It would take more time justifying to my friends and relatives that I’m not going to vote," he says wryly, "than it would take to go to the polling booth
