Fleming College

Standardized time zones were the brainchild of Sir Sandford Fleming, a Scottish-Canadian engineer who was also a surveyor, mapmaker and railway engineer. Named after the inventor, Fleming College in Peterborough offers a range of more than 150 diploma, certificate, apprenticeship, post-graduate and continuing education programs. The 87,000-square-foot Kawartha Trades and Technology Centre hosts full- and part-time trades, apprenticeship and dual-credit high school programs, along with contract training. It features state-of-the-art training equipment for students enrolled in carpentry, welding, plumbing and other trade programs.

Fleming’s Frost campus in Lindsay specializes in environmental training education. It features an alternative wastewater treatment system along with a wind turbine, pollinator gardens, an arboretum, a green roof, an apiary and a geothermal heating and cooling system. Fleming has more graduates working in the environmental and natural resource sectors than any other college in Canada. Arts students train at the Haliburton campus, which offers naturally lit studio spaces, an outdoor patio beside the 40-installation-strong Haliburton Sculpture Forest, and the Centre for Making. The centre boasts equipment such as 3D printers, scanners, a laser engraver, a digital embroidery machine, a vinyl cutter and an industrial sewing machine. Students in any of the school’s programs are welcome to use the tools.

• Conservation Biology: This is the only diploma program in Canada that focuses solely on applied skills and research in animal biodiversity conservation. Students learn how to carry out genetic and tissue sampling, identify at-risk species and perform field surveys.

• Resources Drilling Technician: Students train in eight sectors of drilling, including construction, geotechnical and water well.

• Respiratory Therapy: This two-year program prepares students to become health care professionals specializing in respiratory, cardiac, and pulmonary diseases in a range of settings. The learning environment includes a high-tech simulation centre.
