The University of Regina is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2024, although its roots as a Regina college date back much further. The school has earned a reputation for innovative thinking. It was the first university in Western Canada to offer co-op studies and the province’s first green roof was constructed on top of its Research and Innovation Centre. The school is home to 10 institutional research centres, eight Canada Research Chairs, 30 research labs and more than 800 active researchers in a variety of fields. That progressive spirit continues at the Centre for Experiential and Service Learning, where students get help in finding hands-on learning opportunities, receive training before going out to volunteer, and obtain guidance in resumé writing, networking and interview skills.

The main campus is situated in the heart of Regina’s Wascana Centre, one of the largest urban parks in North America. It’s an ideal place for jogging, cycling, skating and skiing. To help students avoid the harsh winter weather, most of the university’s buildings are connected.

A Student Wellness Centre, opened in 2021, is operated by nurse practitioners from the faculty of nursing. The U of R is diverse: nearly 15 per cent of students identify as Indigenous, and nearly 19 per cent come from other countries. “As we celebrate our past, we know our future, much like the prairie horizon, is limitless,” says president Jeff Keshen. “We are an institution focused on supporting our students, providing hands-on learning opportunities and experiences to develop career-ready graduates, conducting research that positively impacts our world, and following through on our commitment to truth and reconciliation.”
