Laurentian University
Laurentian University serves its region and beyond with strengths in rural and northern health, education, engineering sustainable mining and environmental remediation. Located on the traditional territory of the Atikameksheng Anishnawbek, the campus is surrounded by five freshwater lakes, conservation boreal forest and kilometres of nature trails, though only an eight minute drive from downtown. Laurentian offers more than 114 programs. The school is bilingual, and 34 programs and hundreds of course selections are offered in French. “Laurentian provides a truly unique student experience with its bilingual and tricultural environment,” says president Lynn Wells. “Our graduates are known by employers to be career-ready, and we’re proud to have the highest post-graduation employment rate in Ontario.” With smaller class sizes and modern classrooms and labs, students can take advantage of research opportunities, often as early as the upper years of undergraduate level, at a number of on-campus research centres, such as the Mineral Exploration Research Centre and the Centre for Research in Occupational Safety and Health. Many graduates maintain close ties to the school, offering learning and mentorship opportunities. It’s not surprising that 93 per cent of grads are employed within six months of completing their studies, and 98 per cent are employed within two years. The Student Centre features study and recreation spots, a games room and a dental hygienist.
Campus Buzz: Every year, more than 100 students, alumni and donors bring Laurentian’s Model Parliament to life in Ottawa by debating bills in Canada’s Senate Chamber.
