Université Laval
Université Laval is a large, research-intensive institution in Quebec City. It hosts six Canada Excellence Research Chairs—in photonics innovation, Arctic remote sensing, metabolic health, neurophotonics, neuroplasticity and infectious diseases. Laval’s law school and faculty of social sciences have produced some of Canada’s leading politicians, including former prime ministers Brian Mulroney and Jean Chrétien. Since its creation in 1993, Entrepreneuriat Laval, a business incubator that helps students create personalized business plans, has contributed to the creation of more than 1,000 companies and has helped its clients raise roughly $73 million in funding, achieve more than $43 million in sales and create over 450 jobs in the past five years.“Université Laval is one of Canada’s leading research universities and one of the world’s leading universities in the French-speaking world,” says rector Sophie D’Amours. “We train tomorrow’s leaders through our flexible study paths, and have a greater impact on society with our interdisciplinary research projects that propose innovative, global solutions to major contemporary issues.” The student body has approximately 7,400 international students from 125 countries, as well as non-francophones polishing their French-language skills at the École des langues vivantes. Famous for its successful Rouge et Or sports teams, the university hosts around 225 student associations. Most of Laval’s nearly 40 buildings are connected by underground walkways—handy during winter—and eight kilometres of cycling lanes.
Campus Buzz: Students can stay active in the winter months on a 1.5 kilometre cross-country ski loop, 400-metre ice rink, walking trails and snowshoeing trails.
