Western Canada’s oldest university offers more than 100 programs, including some unique courses like assistive technology device design and decolonizing and Indigenizing engineering education. Professional schools offer degrees in architecture, engineering, medicine, dentistry, law and pharmacy. “As Manitoba’s research university, we combine a legacy of academic excellence with a forward-looking approach to the challenges of today and tomorrow,” says president Michael Benarroch. “Our diverse programs are enriched by unique opportunities for work-integrated and experiential learning. This equips our students not just to excel in their careers, but to drive innovation, foster inclusivity and create lasting impact in their communities and beyond.” The university is fostering the development of the next generation of Indigenous leaders by providing inclusive learning that promotes Indigenous student success. Home to more than 2,994 First Nations, Métis and Inuit students, U of M offers specialized Indigenous programs, bursaries and scholarships, an annual graduation powwow and a Indigenous student community space, which includes a Mashkiki Gitigaan (medicine garden). The U of M’s Wawatay STEM Pathways program provides Indigenous students in the sciences with community, cultural, academic and research supports from orientation to graduation. While the trademark Georgian-style architecture reminds students of the school’s history, the school’s state-of-the-art, 100,000-square-foot Active Living Centre welcomes visitors with its floor-to-ceiling windows. An extensive tunnel system links old and new buildings, keeping students warm during Winnipeg’s harsh winters.

Campus Buzz: Students of all faiths now have a place to go for their spiritual needs at the Bannatyne campus. The new multi-faith centre has sacred texts, prayer mats and space for prayer and ceremony.
