University of Regina
The University of Regina celebrated its 50th anniversary last year. “With more than 17,200 students, 92,000 alumni, a reputation for world-class research and a commitment to developing career-ready graduates, the University of Regina has achieved amazing results during our first half-century as an independent degree-granting institution,” says president Jeff Keshen. “This remarkable success serves as a strong foundation for our next 50 years of teaching, research and service to community.” U of R was the first university in Western Canada to offer co-op studies, and the province’s first green roof was constructed on top of its Research and Innovation Centre. The school is home to 18 university- and faculty-based research centres, nine Canada Research Chairs, 29 research labs and more than 800 active researchers in a variety of fields. That progressive spirit continues at the Centre for Experiential and Service Learning, where students get help in finding hands-on learning opportunities, receive training before going out to volunteer, and get help with resumé writing, networking and interviewing. The main campus is situated in the heart of Regina’s Wascana Centre, one of the largest urban parks in North America. To help students avoid the harsh winter weather, most of the university’s buildings are connected. A Student Wellness Centre, which opened in 2021, is operated by nurse practitioners from the faculty of nursing.
Campus buzz: In 2025, the University of Regina will host the Vanier Cup, Canada’s national university football championship, for the first time.
