Blue Jays’ Escobar given three-game suspension
Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Yunel Escobar has been suspended for three games for wearing a homophobic slur on his eyeblack during last Saturday’s game. His pay for the lost games will be donated to the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. Escobar will also have to complete sensitivity training.
Through a translator at a news conference, Escobar said, "I don’t have anything against homosexuals. I have friends that are gay."
Escobar sported the words "Tu ere maricon" on his eyetape over the weekend, an expression that means "you’re a faggot" in Spanish.
The suspension begins this evening.
