Cash donations pour in for Chinese dissident
Contributions to help Ai Weiwei pay punitive tax bill
Over 20,000 people donated at least $840,000 to Chinese artist and vocal government critic Ai Weiwei since last Tuesday, the New York Times reports. Earlier last week, Chinese officials slapped Ai with an eye-popping $2.4 million tax bill (more than three times what the government says he has evaded in taxes) to pay in 15 days. Ai maintains the government’s accusation are politically motivated.
